Understanding Flicker (AIA-EiQ-03)

Description
[CEU: 2.0]

Course Description:
It is common for any new technology to have a few ups and downs during its introduction to the market. For example, we experienced the evolution of fluorescents, from moderately efficient, buzzing T12s, to highly efficient electronic T5s. As LEDs rise to the top of the lighting food chain, and become more and more prominent for both commercial and residential specifications, both lighting designers and homeowners need to have a better understanding on how the technology works, so that history does not repeat itself. Today, there is no doubt that LEDs are an amazingly efficient technology, however the concern over their quality, in particular the topic of Flicker, has become the subject of numerous recent research studies and magazine articles. This course is designed to help shed light on why flicker is occurring in certain SSL products and how the lighting industry, as a whole, is tackling the dilemma.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course a learner will be able to...
1. Define several types of flicker, the technical vocabulary associated with flicker, and the relationship to the 60Hz AC sine wave.
2. Recognize the human health effects that flicker can have on individuals.
3. Analyze and compare the different levels of flicker in both legacy as well as SSL lamps.
4. Explain the current metrics used by the lighting industry to quantify flicker in SSL.

As of January 1, 2025 we are no longer offering AIA CEU credits for this course.
